Vol. 1 - Ch. 273 - Combined Strike
"Clan Brother, the Chen family is performing a grand family ritual right now. Should we get closer to take a look?" Shi Chenghou asked, staring into the distance at Chaotic Burial Mountain at night.Perched in a nearby tree, Shi Chengyu shook his head.
"The Clan Leader told us to observe from afar and not to act rashly before he left. Besides, the Chen family can still deal with Clan Brother Chengzong. We must be careful. Wait a couple of days. After our family makes its decision, it won't be too late to move."
Shi Chenghou said nothing further.
"All right. Let's stick to the plan we discussed. You watch this side, and I’ll go over there and see if anything’s amiss. Use the wind spirit bird to communicate. Maybe the Chen family’s grand ritual is just a cover for an escape.”
“Fine.”
After a brief exchange, the two of them quickly separated.
But out of the two men's sight, high above, a soul-form invisible to them was swiftly drifting away.
A few li away, Chen Qingyu and the others had already gathered.
Since the intruders were powerful cultivators, only the three Innate Realm martial artists would take action this time. With the help of departed clan members, however, they had enough manpower.
After learning from the deceased elders that the Shi family had sent the same two men who had previously ambushed the clan, the three men's faces showed a trace of gravity.
Having clashed with them before, the three men knew that the two were not ordinary Innate Realm martial artists.
Still, their numerical advantage made them unafraid. If they could eliminate the two men now, it would ease the pressure for the upcoming clan war.
At that moment, Chen Tianyu held up a rough map of Chaotic Burial Mountain's terrain made by the clan. He pointed out the two men's positions on the map and discussed their strategy.
They could not communicate directly with the clan’s departed, but they could pray to the Divine Tree and obtain information.
"I fought one of them before. He’s probably an Innate Realm martial artist, and he has already comprehended the Innate Realm. His strength is rather troublesome,” Chen Qingyu reminded them.
Although he had once slain an Innate Realm Great Completion martial artist, it had required the combined efforts of many, as well as pushing the Seven Emotions Six Desires Sword to its utmost.
If a late-Innate Realm martial artist tried to flee, he alone could not stop him, let alone Chen Tianjing and Chen Tianyu.
"According to Uncle Xingba of the clan, the two are in different locations. Then we can pick them off one by one. Even if we can’t deal with both at once, we must at least keep one of them behind,” said Chen Tianyu after some thought.
The other two did not object. With the three of them working together to take down one of them, it was a workable plan.
Unfortunately, the clan hadn’t gathered much intelligence on the Shi family, so they couldn’t learn specific details about the two who had come. They could only pick one at random.
After settling on a plan, the three wasted no time. Their figures soon melted into the darkness.
…
Night flowed like water, and a faint chill permeated the air.
Perched in a treetop, Shi Chenghou appeared relaxed. As an Innate Realm martial artist, his qi and blood were abundant. Moreover, he was a late practitioner of the Innate stage, so he felt no fear of the cold. Even the ants on the tree would detour rather than cross his path.
The clan had originally sent other members to assist the two of them, but bringing more people to scout would have been inconvenient. Having just the two Innate Realm late martial artists made things far easier.
Watching the Chen clan in the distance, with their lights blazing as if the grand family ritual were still underway, Shi Chenghou couldn’t help but let out a few cold snorts.
"This is the Chen family’s last moment of glory," he thought.
Once our clan finishes probing the situation, the Chen family will be finished. Then, we can take over this place and avenge our family’s grievances!
Shi Chenghou didn’t look any longer. He slowly closed his eyes.
They had been scouting the area for several days, and the Chen Clan hadn’t detected them during that time. All that remained was to closely watch the Chen Clan’s movements and ensure they didn’t escape.
There hadn't been much to do these past few days, so he decided to rest, recover his strength, and prepare for the slaughter to come. However, with so few people in the Chen Clan, it still wouldn't satisfy him completely.
As Shi Chenghou closed his eyes, the only sounds in the surrounding darkness were the soft rustle of insects.
Suddenly, he opened his eyes and fixed his gaze on the sky above.
The bright moon hung high overhead, and the stars twinkled. Nothing appeared abnormal, yet Shi Chenghou’s puzzlement did not lessen. He felt somehow that something was off.
Lost in thought, he suddenly saw a cold glint in the darkness not far away.
It was a bone gleaming under the moonlight.
The bone was snow white and translucent, yet a dense surge of Blood Qi burst from it.
Danger!
A sense of danger welled up in Shi Chenghou’s chest, but he moved quickly. He bent his legs, coiled, and sprang up, his whole body vaulting into the air.
Just as he prepared to make out the attacker’s face, a life-or-death threat struck from above.
Looking up, he saw a young figure who had already gathered his momentum somehow. The youth held a leg bone in his hand, its surface flashing under the moonlight and sending a chill through Shi Chenghou’s heart.
“This is—!!!”
Shi Chenghou’s earlier ease vanished. He quickly summoned a clan Divine Stone in his palm.
Driven by his qi and blood, the Stone erupted with a blinding radiance. Beneath that light, a thin, wing-like barrier swiftly wrapped around his body.
This was the protection they had prayed for before leaving the clan—this delicate shield’s defensive power was extraordinary.
Whoosh!
When the white bone struck the barrier, a ripping sound filled the air immediately.
Before Shi Chenghou could rely fully on the Divine Stone’s protection from the clan and break free, the force behind the bone slammed him back down to the ground.
Flap, flap...
Countless birds were startled into flight by the commotion.
Before Shi Chenghou could get to his feet, another figure burst out from the dense woods below.
This time, he could see clearly—the attacker was an Innate Realm martial artist from the Chen Clan.
There was no time to warn Shi Chengyu—he had to dodge again.
Shi Chengyu, who had been closely watching the Chen Clan’s movements from afar, sensed the disturbance and hurriedly turned his head. A flash of surprise crossed his face.
"Not good!"
Without pausing, he darted through the trees toward the source of the commotion, sensing something was wrong.
"Damn it! How despicable! You actually ambushed us!" Shi Chenghou, surrounded by the three of them, shouted in fury. He was clearly disgusted by Chen Qingyu and the others’ tactics.
No matter how much he cursed, however, the three remained unmoved. The Blood Qi on the white bones in their hands grew denser with each strike, carrying a ruthless killing intent.
Shi Chenghou had relied on his higher cultivation and mastery of the Innate Realm. He had not taken the three seriously. He even managed to strike back occasionally. Although he could not break free, he believed that, if he held on a little longer, Shi Chengyu would arrive soon after hearing the commotion.
