Chapter 486 - 486: DSMW [486]
Chapter 486 - 486: DSMW [486]
My name is Miles. I was once a guardian spirit residing within the Millennium Puzzle.I spent my days living peacefully together with a big-busted, beautiful girl and adorable dragon girls.
Whenever there was nothing to do, I would be called out by my host to help play cards.
I could perfectly handle even the summoning of God Cards. Accel Synchro and Trinity Accel Synchro were no problem at all. I could even legitimately bring out a god-slaying weapon that reached the endpoint of Xyz.
But all of that is in the past now.
Now… my name is Miles, an completely ordinary first-year student at Fusion Academy.
Standing on the podium of the first-year classroom, Miles looked down at the more than one hundred unfamiliar faces below with a hint of confusion.
This year, due to the accumulation of various favorable factors, the number of Duelists enrolling in Fusion Academy had broken into triple digits for the first time ever. This finally allowed the large classroom, which would normally feel far too empty during lessons, to be put to full use.
Standing behind Miles was Professor Field, who was serving as the first-year homeroom teacher this year.
Though advanced in age, his sturdy bearing as a retired veteran, combined with a stern, unyielding face, meant that Professor Field merely standing on the podium was enough for an indescribable pressure to spread throughout the entire classroom.
Even though most of the students seated in the classroom were the children of prominent noble families, no one dared to act out in the slightest during the professor's class.
It was widely acknowledged that the best classroom discipline in the entire Fusion Academy was found in Professor Field's Duel classes.
"That's the situation. Student Miles enrolled late due to physical reasons. I also hope everyone will get along amicably with him."
Of course, while Professor Field was strict, he was also very responsible as a teacher.
After carefully introducing Miles, he even prepared to arrange a seat for Miles that would make it easier for him to integrate into the grade.
However, just as Professor Field was considering where to seat Miles, the small imperial princess with blond hair and golden eyes, Nova, suddenly raised her little hand high.
"Me, me, me! Let Miles sit next to me, Professor!"
No one expected that Princess Nova, a daughter of the royal family, would be so enthusiastic all of a sudden. Not only the surrounding students, but even Miles himself was startled.
It seemed that just from Miles's voice and name, little Nova had already guessed that he was that Miles.
However, as Miles stood on the podium, he suddenly felt countless scorching gazes fixed directly on him.
They were called 'scorching' gazes, but they were absolutely not friendly.
Rage and jealousy.
On his very first day of enrollment, after receiving an invitation from Princess Nova to be her desk-mate, Miles seemed to have been targeted by the other male students from various families in the class.
Which was only natural.
A girl like Nova—sweet and adorable in appearance, using a Dragonmaid Deck for Duels, and possessing the status of a princess of the Kaiser royal family.
With everyone at the academy being at the height of adolescence, how could the young masters of the various families not secretly harbor feelings for her?
Regardless, for Miles, an opening like this didn't seem to be the kind of stability he had hoped for.
"How did things even turn out like this?" Miles recalled helplessly.
Time rewinds to yesterday…
After the airship carrying Miles and the others landed at the Seth family's private airport, they had barely disembarked when they ran into Kaima, who had been waiting at her family's airport for quite some time.
Having long since figured out Miles's next course of action, Kaima had already made arrangements in advance with Vice Principal Raiden—that greedy old man.
The "Fusion Academy Temporary Enrollment Application Form" in her hand was the spoils of monetary power.
Kaima had calculated precisely that once Miles achieved financial freedom, he would definitely not choose to remain in Axet.
And so, with Miles returning to Livorden together with Aisha, Fusion Academy was currently the best destination for him.
However, after obtaining a body and lacking even an official identity, enrolling in Fusion Academy was not a simple matter for Miles.
Thus, having taken care of everything in advance and striking with perfect timing the moment Miles landed, Kaima directly stuffed Miles with a reason he had no way to refuse.
"Kaima?"
"Miles?"
However, although Kaima had calculated everything, she hadn't anticipated that Miles's new body would be a reduced version compared to the one she had seen inside the obelisk tower.
Of course, by 'reduced,' it certainly wasn't anywhere near as extreme as Kaima herself shrinking directly into a little girl back then.
Although the current Miles looked even younger than Aisha, fourteen years old, far from meeting Fusion Academy's minimum enrollment age.
Though it was possible to enroll early through strong connections, just like Princess Nova had, the Seth family's influence was second only to the Kaiser royal family.
Miles clearly wouldn't be able to transfer directly into the second or third year. He had no choice but to start over from the first year.
That wasn't something connections could change.
There were some hard rules within the academy that even Vice Principal Raiden had no authority over.
They were all regulations left behind by that elusive headmaster who never seemed to show his face.
For example, no matter how high a family's status was, no one at Fusion Academy was allowed to have a private dorm room.
Students were required to share accommodations with others—one of the headmaster's strange rules.
"Hm↗↘, you've become unexpectedly kind of cute, Miles," Kaima commented.
"Not as cute as you," Miles shot back with a sarcastic tone.
"You…!"
Failing to get the better of Miles in their first exchange, Kaima's face flushed, whether from anger or embarrassment was hard to tell.
"Cute?" Aisha and Ren exchanged puzzled looks.
If Miles had called some other girl cute, the two of them might have felt a twinge of jealousy.
But Kaima Seth, judging from the impressions she had given since they first met, had unquestionably nothing to do with the word 'cute.'
Of course, what they didn't know was that the 'cute' Miles referred to was Kaima's former loli form.
"No time to banter. Take it, Miles."
Kaima casually flicked the enrollment application form in her hand toward Miles.
"This is…!"
Holding it in his hands, Miles couldn't help but reveal his astonishment at how thoroughly Kaima had seen right through him.
The corners of Kaima's lips lifted a little as she smiled. "I figured this would be the thing you need most right now. No need to be polite with me."
Miles opened the application form.
The thin "Fusion Academy Enrollment Application Form" was only a few pages long in total.
The first page required the applicant to fill in basic personal information.
The second page asked about when the applicant awakened their Spirit Eyes, when their first summon occurred, and what type of monster was summoned.
Miles figured that the information on these two pages could be fabricated at will.
After all, there was no way the academy would investigate his past like they were examining a criminal.
And even if they wanted to investigate, they wouldn't find anything. Because Miles's past simply didn't exist in this world.
The first two pages could be filled with nonsense, but when Miles flipped to the third page, he sensed that something was off.
The third page of the application required the applicant to register the Deck they used.
Lightly touching the paper, Miles could sense a faint flow of mana within it. Thanks to the body crafted by Viel, whose overall performance was excellent, his sensitivity to mana was also extremely high.
It seemed that this Deck registration page couldn't be fooled through fabrication.
Although Miles didn't know the exact purpose of the mana flow on this page, to be safe, it was better not to make anything up and instead honestly register the Decks he could use.
As for which Deck he should register?
With the evolution of the Spirit Eyes allowing him to freely switch forms, the number of Decks Miles could use was simply too many.
And sometimes, having too many choices was a problem in itself.
Of course, there was another point Miles needed to be especially mindful of.
Among the several Decks he could currently use, the vast majority belonged to people from Fusion Academy, and those people were all fairly well-known figures within the academy.
White Dragon, Dark Magician, Dragonmaid, HERO, Mokey Mokey…?
Using an identical Deck would very likely spark unnecessary discussions among the onlookers.
In every sense, Fusion Academy was a place brimming with vitality, and Miles had personally witnessed its gossip-spreading capabilities.
Even the tiniest piece of hearsay could spread throughout the entire academy in an uproar by the very next day.
So what about registering the Decks of the two from Synchron Academy—Krista's Stardust Deck and Lost's Red Dragon Archfiend Deck?
Setting aside the Red Dragon Archfiend Deck, which Miles couldn't fully use yet.
Wouldn't it be a bit inappropriate to play Synchro right after enrolling in a Fusion Academy, no less?
After much thought and careful consideration, Miles wrote the name "Drytron" in the Deck registration field on the third page.
Fusion Academy—playing Rituals shouldn't be over the line, right?
Standing beside him, Aisha craned her neck and watched Miles fill out the enrollment application from start to finish, clearly enjoying herself.
"By the way, it's amazing that Senior Kaima managed to settle Mr. Miles's enrollment just like that! She's incredible!"
Normally, matters like this required a family head to negotiate directly with the academy.
That's why, during the discussion on the airship, both Aisha and Ren had been so troubled by it.
After all, neither Aisha nor Ren was the head of the Carlos or Austin families.
So if they wanted to negotiate with the academy in the name of their families, they first had to clearly explain Miles's existence to their families in advance.
On this point, the Seth family—and Kaima Seth in particular—held an unparalleled advantage.
Not only did Kaima understand Miles's existence better than anyone else, she also held the position of head of the Seth family.
"Aisha, I still have to remind you of something."
As he filled out the enrollment information, Miles spoke to Aisha beside him.
"There's no such thing as a free lunch in this world."
Finally reaching the last page, which was usually reserved solely for the applicant's signature.
However, the final page of the "Fusion Academy Enrollment Application Form" had already been half-filled in advance.
Applicant: _____ Applying Family: Seth
This was where the dagger finally revealed itself.
Once Miles signed his name on this page, his future identity would likely become bound to the Seth family.
Kaima… this was your true objective, wasn't it?
Well, to be honest, Miles had already foreseen this.
Since Kaima had helped negotiate with the academy on his behalf, the name used in the end was naturally going to be that of the Seth family.
It wouldn't make sense for the application Kaima brought back to have "Carlos" written on the last page. That would have been far stranger.
Seeing Miles hesitate at the most crucial moment, Kaima quietly swallowed and grew tense herself.
"Ahem, Miles, you don't need to take this too seriously. This is just… following academy regulations, going through the motions."
"So if I sign this now, I won't be held responsible?"
Even Miles himself felt that statement made him sound like a complete scumbag.
Kaima explained seriously, "At least within the academy, aside from Vice Principal Raiden, no one will know about this. And as for your official destination in the future, I already told you about that before."
What Kaima had told Miles back then was that the Seth family would not force him to make a choice, and no matter what choice Miles ultimately made, the Seth family would fully support him.
As Kaima Seth, she surely wouldn't go back on her word in matters like this.
"Alright, Kaima. I trust you!"
With a bold stroke, Miles signed his name on the final page of the application.
From that point on, Miles was officially enrolled at Fusion Academy.
Which led to the scene that followed…
"Very well. Since Student Nova has made the request, Student Miles, you will sit together with Student Nova."
Professor Field's original intention in assigning Miles a seat had been to help him, as a late enrollee, integrate into the academy as quickly as possible.
Now that someone had volunteered, it was perfect—saving Professor Field the trouble of deliberation.
However, while the professor saved himself some effort, he seemed to have entirely overlooked the complicated inner worlds of adolescent boys.
"Yay!"
Seeing Professor Field agree, Princess Nova's smile grew even brighter. Her crescent-shaped eyes were so adorable they could easily melt the restless hearts of boys in their youth.
At the same time, it only added fuel to the fire, further igniting the jealousy around them.
"Over here, over here, Miles!"
Perhaps due to some unspoken rule among the first-year students, although Princess Nova was extremely popular and her seat was relatively close to the front, the seats to her left and right had always been empty—she had no desk-mate.
Cute as she was, her status as a royal princess made Nova seem like an untouchable alpine flower.
Everyone maintained the optimal distance dictated by noble etiquette, treating her with utmost respect.
But now, this alpine flower that could only be admired from afar shifted inward, leaving the outer seat open for Miles.
"Hehe, Miles, just sit here~"
After saying that, Princess Nova even patted the seat with her little hand—the spot still warm from where she had been sitting.
As Miles prepared to sit down, hushed discussions had already begun among the boys around them.
"What's this guy's deal? Why is Her Highness Nova being so friendly to him?"
"From his name, he doesn't sound like a noble. A commoner-awakened Duelist?"
"If he's a commoner-awakened Duelist, then he's probably a rookie."
"Damn it, is it just because he's handsome?"
"We have to let him know that Fusion Academy is a place where strength does the talking!"
Unlike the jealousy-fueled adolescent boys, the girls had quite a different perspective.
Because Miles's fourteen-year-old body looked younger than most first-year students.
And Nova also happened to have enrolled early. That made the two of them look surprisingly well-matched.
"One's cute, the other's handsome."
"They're such a perfect match—this CP is super sweet, I'm shipping it!"
While the boys were still drowning in envy, jealousy, and resentment, the girls had already started shipping the couple.
Meanwhile, in a second-year classroom, Aisha Carlos was staring out the window absentmindedly.
"Today is Mr. Miles's first day of class. I wonder if he's getting used to it… if he's paying attention."
Whether or not Miles was paying attention, Aisha hadn't listened to a single word in class.
