Chapter 28 Encounters and Questions
Chapter 28 Encounters and Questions
On the somewhat desolate road, a small caravan consisting of a carriage and three horses was galloping along.
The carriage was an open, rough cargo wagon, the guards were dressed as ordinary adventurers, and the caravan owner was huddled among the cargo, trembling and shouting for help.
It was obvious that this was a relatively poor small caravan, and in every respect it was no match for Roland's caravan.
As for those chasing them, causing the group to flee in panic, they were not the bandits that would appear in ordinary stories, but a small group of mutated, ferocious-looking dark beasts.
Upon closer inspection, the three mounted guards were covered in wounds, and even the carriage was swaying precariously, almost falling apart.
Correspondingly, among the dark beasts chasing behind them, there were also some individuals with injuries, though none of them were serious.
It's clear that the two sides had already clashed fiercely on their way here, and in the end, it seems that the Dark Beast side had a clear advantage.
Currently, the caravan is slower than the dark beast horde, and considering the condition of the three guards, they will surely perish if they are caught up.
The caravan owner clearly understood this as well, which is why he desperately called for help after approaching an adventurer's camp and seeing the faint wisp of smoke rising from it.
To his delight, after he cried for help, a figure wearing a cloak actually emerged from the camp.
But what made him feel even more uneasy was that, apart from that figure, there seemed to be no one else.
He was still worried about whether he could help on his own, but the next moment he was stunned.
Because after that figure appeared, the small group of dark beasts that had been chasing them suddenly stopped in their tracks, looked in that direction, and then... rushed towards him in a rush!
"Awooo!!"
It seemed that, in their eyes, the attraction of that suddenly appearing figure far outweighed that of their entire convoy.
This left the small merchant and his three guards completely stunned.
In response to the horde of dark beasts, the cloaked figure raised his hand and threw out two flying axes!
"Pfft."
The axe was thrown with incredible accuracy, and the blade even had a faint golden light on it. The two dark beasts running at the front were hit on the head and immediately fell down!
They didn't die immediately, but they couldn't get up for a while either.
The remaining five or six dark beasts did not stop for their fallen comrade; instead, they accelerated towards the figure.
The man's figure flickered and then disappeared into the camp. The horde of dark beasts rushed in after him, and both sides lost sight of each other for a moment.
The small caravan, which had been fleeing in a disheveled state, stopped upon seeing this, and the caravan owner and his three guards looked at each other in bewilderment.
"Should we...go and help?" one of the guards asked hesitantly.
"But we don't know what's going on inside..." The other person clearly didn't want to go.
"Never mind that, get the carriage repaired quickly!" the caravan owner shouted.
The last guard, who was seriously injured, didn't have the strength to participate in the conversation. He simply took out a bandage to bandage his wounds, then took out a bottle of obviously low-quality recovery potion, carefully drank a small sip, and then put it away.
Neither of them noticed that the two dark beasts that had been knocked down by the flying axe were not dead; in fact, their bodies were gradually merging together.
The three of them busied themselves around the carriage for a while, and finally finished the emergency treatment, so they could continue on their way.
They looked at each other and then asked the same question again: "That person...should we go check on him?"
The caravan owner was clearly conflicted: "Should we... ah!!"
Before they could finish speaking, a mutated dark beast, nearly twice the size of its previous one, pounced on them, followed by a chorus of screams!
—On the other side, You Che was retrieving his throwing axe from the last dark beast.
Although there were quite a few of these dark beasts, they were not completely mutated, only around LV5 or LV6 level, and they were all somewhat injured.
So for him, solving them just took a little more time.
"Alright, I wonder if those people are still around. I still have some questions I'd like to ask them..."
No sooner had he finished speaking than he heard a mournful cry coming from the direction of the main road.
Yu Che: "!?"
When he arrived, he saw a wolf-shaped dark beast, noticeably larger than before, pinning a guard adventurer to the ground and attempting to bite off his head with its three gaping jaws.
The adventurer desperately pressed his broadsword against the dark beast's gaping maw, while the other two adventurers lay on the side, seemingly severely injured and unable to get up.
You Che: "?"
No, it's only been a short time, how did it get like this?
He had already dealt with a group of dark beasts, so how come his group was wiped out by a single one?
Even if this one is clearly a fused dark beast, it's only at the level of two combined, LV8. But the three adventurers, even excluding the one who was already seriously injured, the other two are at LV9 and LV8 respectively, so they shouldn't be inferior in terms of level, right?
Could there be some other enemy?
...I didn't see it either?
You Che was puzzled, but he acted without hesitation, throwing the hound's claws and teeth with a raised hand!
The throwing knife struck the side of the combined dark beast's head with precision. The dark beast paused for a moment, and before it could react, the hound's claws embedded in its neck suddenly burst forth with a burst of scarlet light!
"boom--"
With a muffled thud, the flesh on the neck of the combined dark beast suddenly exploded!
"Awooo!!"
The combined dark beast was severely injured and let out a miserable howl, while turning its head to look at You Che.
But Youche's attacks came one after another: a green rusted short sword coated with holy water, a thrown dagger, and a flying axe came one after another, all hitting its head and neck without missing a beat!
Under the continuous barrage of attacks, the already wounded dark beast let out a defiant roar, and its tall body collapsed helplessly.
You Che then approached and checked on the three adventurers. Finding that they were still alive, he rummaged through the item bags scattered on the ground, found several bottles of recovery potions, and gave them to each of them, thus saving their lives.
Then he looked around and shouted, "Where's the other person? They can come out now!"
A rustling sound came from nearby, and the former caravan owner, covered in leaves, emerged from the bushes.
He rushed to You Che, excitedly grabbing You Che's hand: "Thank you, thank you! Thank you so much for saving me, hero! Thank you!"
"A hero?" You Che chuckled. "No wonder you're a businessman; you always know how to talk a good game."
"Alright, enough with the nonsense. I'm short on time. Take them to the nearby campsite to rest. I also have something I'd like to ask you."
You Che could confirm that the group of dark beasts chasing after the small caravan were not summoned by him.
After all, he had just dealt with a few rotting corpses before dawn, so the next batch shouldn't be coming so soon.
If that's the case, then it's a bit strange that these people were chased here by a group of dark beasts, since this isn't the border.
"These dark beasts also look like they were only recently transformed... then it should be right, it's from the original game's storyline."
Yu Che recalled the plot of the game and had a guess in his mind, but he still wanted to get the definite news and detailed information from the merchant in front of him.
So he pointed in the direction of the camp: "Let's go."
The merchant nodded and smiled obsequiously, "Okay, okay."
